Chapter prose
The ruins of Sarnath-Vector slumbered under the harsh light of Prysmos’s three suns, its glass towers webbed in vines and haunted by machines that hadn’t stirred for years. But as dusk arrived, a pulse traveled through the broken city—a heartbeat of old electricity, faint and forbidden. Somewhere beneath the stone and tangled steel, the ancient generators of the Age of Science were waking, if only for one night. On the shattered highway, Leoric led the Spectral Knights toward the city’s heart. The lion totem on his chest flared gold, a beacon in the falling dark. Galadria marched beside him, her armor glinting with watery blue light, lips set in determination. Witterquick, ever impatient, scouted ahead, the cheetah hologram flickering with every nervous glance. Cryotek brought up the rear, massive and silent, bear totem pulsing gently. “Do you hear it?” Galadria’s voice was quiet. “The city… it’s humming.” Leoric nodded. “We need the generator’s light. Not just for ourselves. If the city wakes, so might hope.” A cruel laugh echoed from the shadows. From the shell of a fallen monorail, Darkstorm emerged, his Darkling Lords in tow. The mollusk horror on his chest glowed sickly purple, painting his features with mockery. “So noble, Leoric. But why let the dead crawl out of their tombs? What if we use this power to rule, not rescue?” Leoric’s jaw set. The old rivalry was alive as ever, charged by the city’s awakening. Witterquick’s eyes darted. “I’ll reach the generator first—” “No,” Leoric said, holding him back. “We go together. This city is full of traps—tech and magic both.” The two factions advanced, each step watched by the city’s glass-eyed windows. As they entered the generator hall, ancient screens flickered, casting cyan and magenta ghosts. The totems on each knight’s chest pulsed, animals of light leaping and circling—lion, bear, dolphin, cheetah—while Darkstorm’s mollusk split the air with a cold glare. The machines spoke. Old speakers crackled with the static of a forgotten age, speaking in riddles neither side could fully understand. The city’s systems wanted a master. The Spectral Knight’s lion faced the Darkling Lord’s mollusk in holographic fury, each trying to claim the city. “Yield, Darkstorm,” Leoric said. “Let the light return to Sarnath-Vector.” Darkstorm only smiled, raising his staff. “Let the city choose its king!” With a surge, the animal totems leapt from their bearers, lion and mollusk colliding in a storm of cyan and violet fire. Power lines sang; the machines shuddered. For a moment, the city was bright as noon, every light alive with longing for the old world. Galadria stepped forward, her dolphin totem slicing the chaos—a path of calm. “We can share the power. Or we both lose it.” Darkstorm hesitated, conflict flickering in his cold eyes. But pride won. “Never!” The city wailed. In a final burst, the generators overloaded. The light crashed down, rolling through the streets, and then—darkness returned. Holograms faded. Machines went silent. The Spectral Knights stood together, backs to the Darkling Lords. No victory, no defeat—only the lesson of power’s cost. As the moons rose, Leoric placed a hand on his chest. The lion’s glow was faint, but steady. “One night of light,” he murmured, “to remind us what we could be.” Far behind, Darkstorm glowered, plotting his next move. For now, the city slept again. But tomorrow was a new day on Prysmos.
