Chapter prose
Alex’s hands trembled as he steadied the Gunstar’s control yoke. Stars stretched past the canopy, their pinprick brilliance fractured by the pale green CRT light flickering across his face. Grig glanced sideways, amber eyes unreadable under the instrument glow. They were a team now—Earth kid and Rylan navigator—and the Star League’s last hope. But hope had a price. On the comm, Xur’s voice came thin and cold: “Starfighter. I offer parley.” Alex gritted his teeth, but Grig raised a scaly palm. “We must listen,” he urged, his voice gravelly but calm. The Ko-Dan command ship loomed on the Gunstar’s display, surrounded by a tight formation of gunmetal ships. Each one ran with lights blazing, bearing the white signal of surrender. It was a corridor—an impossible safe passage to the heart of the enemy fleet—according to Xur’s terms. Centauri’s advice buzzed in Alex’s memory: never trust a deal that sounds too easy. But the price was clear. Xur offered safe evacuation for the last Rylan refugees if Alex agreed to a staged defeat—fly through the corridor, fire a blank shot, sell the illusion of surrender. Grig’s people would survive. The war, perhaps, would not. In the Gunstar’s tight cockpit, the silence pressed in. “Can we trust him?” Alex whispered. Grig’s spined crest flattened. “Xur’s word is a blade with two edges. But my kin—” Alex’s mind spun. He remembered Maggie’s laugh under the golden trailer park sun. He remembered the cracked pavement and the arcade’s coin glow. He remembered every promise made—every longing to go home. But the war was here, now, in his hands. He banked the Gunstar toward the corridor. Ko-Dan ships parted, a path opening in the void. On the comm, Xur’s tone was syrupy: “Just one demonstration of your defeat, Starfighter, and the path is open.” Grig’s claws flexed on the nav sphere. “If there is hope for my people, I ask you—choose mercy.” Alex’s mouth went dry. He eyed the Ko-Dan ships—surrendering, but each gun turret subtly tracking the Gunstar. A trap? Or a chance? He flicked the comm open. “We accept,” he forced out. “Safe passage for every Rylan ship. Or the deal is off.” Xur’s laugh echoed. “Of course. You have my word.” The Gunstar edged forward, running the corridor. Ships on both sides powered down, yet their angular hulls bristled with silent menace. Grig scanned the displays—“No weapon locks. Yet.” Near the flagship, Alex aimed up, heart hammering. He fired one blank pulse, dramatic, but harmless. The Ko-Dan ships flashed their lights—an acknowledgment or a threat, he couldn’t say. Suddenly, Grig’s console flared. “Incoming transmission from Rylan transports—they’re moving!” Alex looked to Grig. “Do we press on?” Grig nodded, wide-toothed smile breaking his stoicism. “You have done what was needed. Now—let’s remind them the last Starfighter is not so easily fooled.” With a sharp twist, Alex pulled the Gunstar into a loop above the Ko-Dan flagship. The corridor turned from theater to battleground, the Gunstar now a streak of neon against the black. The Ko-Dan turrets whirred, but Grig was faster. “Death Blossom, ready!” Alex pressed the trigger. Starfields spun. The Gunstar became a flaring comet, and the corridor shattered into chaos. When the dust settled, the Rylan transports blinked safely away, and Alex finally let breath fill his lungs. Grig’s scaled hand rested on his arm. “You chose well, Alex.” “Let’s go home,” Alex whispered, knowing both Earth and the League had changed him—forever.
