Chapter prose
The starfield beyond Soyokaze’s main viewport glittered with a thousand distant threats. Inside, however, the tension was more immediate. Enemy signatures blipped on the long-range scanner—a Raalgon flotilla lurking in the nebula, primed for ambush. But Captain Justy Ueki Tylor, hands behind his head and legs crossed atop the command console, seemed blissfully unaware. “Attention, crew!” Tylor announced, his voice echoing over the intercom. “Effective immediately, I declare a mandatory rest period. That means naps, games, tea—anything but work!” Yuriko Star, crisp in her uniform, snapped her eyes from the red alert display to Tylor. “Captain, the Raalgon are in striking distance! We should be at full readiness—” Tylor merely grinned. “All the better to catch up on sleep, Star-san. Besides, what’s life without a little trust in luck?” Yamamoto, clipboard trembling in his grip, approached with visible distress. “Captain, per regulation 14-IV, we have to man all stations. This is irresponsible—” But the crew, already infected by Tylor’s laissez-faire atmosphere, had begun drifting from their posts. In the mess, Harumi poured tea for a twinkling-eyed engineer. Down the hall, a pair of ensigns played cards, their comms set to vibrate just in case. The bridge, once abuzz with protocol, now resembled a lounge, with subdued voices and stifled giggles. Yuriko set her jaw. “If you won’t command, I will. Yamamoto, let’s keep this ship together.” Yamamoto nodded, flustered but determined. “Aye, Acting Captain.” They made the rounds, nudging crew back to consoles. But Tylor drifted through, humming a tune, encouraging a nap here, a snack there. “Relax, everyone! The more rested, the better the reflexes. Trust me.” Unknown to them, the Raalgon fleet, concealed in the nebula, waited for a sign of weakness. But as their sensors probed, they found the Soyokaze’s systems erratic, its energy signatures wavering like a ship in distress. Suspicious, the Raalgon commander hesitated. “It’s too easy,” she muttered. “Could be a trap.” Back inside, Yuriko and Yamamoto pressed on with their patchwork defense. Just as Yuriko was about to issue an order to raise shields, a junior comms officer let out a soft yawn—and accidentally triggered the external comms. A burst of cheerful lounge music broadcasted directly toward the nebula, accompanied by Tylor’s own humming. On the Raalgon bridge, Azalyn and her officers stared at the transmission, bewildered. “Either they’re insane,” her aide said, “or they know something we don’t.” Azalyn’s eyes narrowed, torn between offense and intrigue. “Withdraw. If this is psychological warfare, I won’t risk my fleet.” Within minutes, the Raalgon ships vanished from sensors. On the Soyokaze, Yuriko and Yamamoto blinked at the sudden silence, then at a winking Tylor. “See? A little rest goes a long way,” Tylor said, stretching. “And sometimes, the best way to win is not to play at all.” Harumi offered a gentle laugh, and even Yuriko found herself fighting a smile. The crew returned to their posts, the brush with disaster fading into another chapter of the Soyokaze’s unlikely victories. Yamamoto scribbled a note on his clipboard: ‘Captain’s methods—utterly illogical, inexplicably effective.’ Somewhere beyond the stars, destiny itself seemed to be laughing.
Original idea

Crew Dynamics path: Captain Tylor schedules a ‘mandatory rest’ during a Raalgon alert. Yuriko and Yamamoto try to run the Soyokaze properly; the crew follows Tylor’s nonsense and accidentally spoils an ambush.
