The Giver

In a tightly controlled society that has eradicated pain, color, and deep feeling through 'Sameness,' Jonas is chosen to become the new Receiver of Memory. Guided by the Giver, he experiences the vivid joys and sorrows of the world before, awakening to the cost of enforced harmony. As he questions the morality of his community’s peace, Jonas faces impossible choices about freedom and individuality. The story explores the price of utopia, the value of memory, and the complexity of human experience.

How they stand to one another

Jonas

Lead

An adult Jonas: early twenties, pale skin, straight light brown hair cut short, clear gray eyes with an intense, searching gaze; lean build, upright posture; wears simple, collarless tunic and pants in muted tones; stands with a mix of curiosity and resolve, never generic.

Curious, empathetic, quietly rebellious, burdened by knowledge. Bound to the Giver, Fiona, Gabriel, and in tension with Chief Elder.

The Giver

Ally

An adult man in his sixties, deeply lined face, long white hair and beard, piercing pale eyes; broad-shouldered but stooped, always in layered, loose-fitting robes of gray; hands often folded or resting on a book; silhouette is distinct from Jonas: older, heavier, more contemplative.

Wise, weary, compassionate, haunted by memory. Mentor to Jonas; keeps distance from others.

Fiona

Heart

An adult Fiona: early twenties, warm brown skin, curly auburn hair tied back, gentle green eyes, soft features; wears the community's functional dress but with a subtle individuality (a colored ribbon, a different cut); posture is open, hands expressive, face quick to show emotion.

Kind, nurturing, quietly passionate, torn between duty and feeling. Connects Jonas to ordinary life and stakes; close to both Jonas and Asher.

Chief Elder

Rival

An adult woman in her fifties, sharp-featured, silver-streaked hair in a severe bun, pale blue eyes, upright and commanding; wears the formal, high-collared robes of authority in a lighter, almost clinical palette; always stands with hands clasped, posture rigid and unyielding.

Authoritative, pragmatic, unwavering, believes in the system. In tension with Jonas and the Giver; ultimate guardian of Sameness.

Asher

Witness

An adult Asher: early twenties, tan skin, tousled dark hair, lively brown eyes, broad smile; athletic build, moves with restless energy; wears standard community attire but often disheveled; carries a small communicator device as a sign of his role as Assistant Director of Recreation.

Loyal, energetic, well-meaning, sometimes naive but observant. Interprets community rules to Jonas and Fiona; friend to both.

Visual language

Visuals evoke classic black and white cinema: stark contrasts, deep shadows, and minimalist staging. The world feels stripped to essentials, with focus on expressive lighting and negative space. Key art and portraits highlight character identity through silhouette and gesture, maintaining era-appropriate details. New stories and remixes use this restrained, filmic approach for a timeless, dramatic mood.

High-contrast, dramatic, film noir-inspired. Smooth, subtle grain, matte finish.
