Chapter prose
Sammy Clay sat hunched over the rickety desk in his Brooklyn apartment, the ticking of the radiator pipes and the muffled clang of a distant subway his only company. Outside, winter dusk pressed against the glass, and in his mind, the world stretched far beyond the city’s familiar grid: across the Atlantic, into the battered heart of war. His pencil hovered over the paper, waiting. He pictured The Escapist—tall, masked, and resolute—standing upon the bomb-shattered rooftops of Milan. Rain, gray and relentless, pelted the city, washing the dust and ash from marble statues and shattered bricks alike. This chapter, Sammy decided, would not be about grand battles or secret weapons. It would be about saving a single family—a sliver of hope in the ruins. In his mind’s eye, The Escapist crept through a ruined street, boots crunching on the debris. The Allied bombardment had ended only hours before, and still the air tasted of gunpowder and panic. Joe—no, not Joe, The Escapist—paused, listening for voices in the rubble. Somewhere beneath a collapsed shopfront came the faintest cry. He moved quickly, shifting beams with preternatural strength, calling softly in Italian: "Sono qui per aiutarvi!" He remembered his own family’s desperate whispers in the Prague night. Each brick moved was an act of penance, a prayer. The family—a mother, a son perhaps ten, a father pinned beneath a fallen joist—stared at the sudden figure in the half-light. The child clung to his mother’s sleeve, eyes wide in terror and awe. "Stay calm. I’ll get you out," The Escapist promised in his gruff, accented Italian. He knelt beside the father, pushing at the joist, willing his muscles not to tremble. The mother’s hands were raw from digging. "Who are you?" she whispered, as if afraid the answer would vanish with the smoke. "A friend," he said. "A magician." He used a sliver of mirror from the debris to check the father’s leg—broken, but not bleeding badly. Carefully, he braced the joist and guided the family out, one by one. The boy hesitated, staring at the Escapist’s mask. "Will you come with us?" the boy asked. "I’ll be right behind you," The Escapist replied, squeezing his shoulder. Once outside, he guided them through the wreckage, keeping low as a distant siren wailed. He led them to a cellar door, where the resistance had hidden medical supplies. The mother tried to thank him, but tears made her voice falter. "It’s not magic," The Escapist said quietly. "It’s hope." Sammy paused, staring at his page. He felt Joe’s absence—his cousin’s longing to save his own family, trapped continents away. Maybe, in ink and paper, they could save someone tonight. Sammy pressed his pencil to the paper, letting rain and rubble become salvation, and hope take the shape of a man in a mask.
