Chapter prose
Long before she was the terror whispered among Spaceknights, the Wraithqueen was a child in a world of shifting shadows. She was born in the heart of a Dire Wraith brood hive, deep beneath the obsidian soils of Wraithworld—a world shrouded in perpetual twilight, where the horizon bled ash and the air trembled with silent conspiracies. Even among her own, she was marked—her eyes a sharper yellow, her mind quicksilver, her voice always too calm for her age. Her earliest memories were not of comfort, but of contention. Wraithchildren learned by watching—by imitating the elders who could change shape with a thought, who wore new faces the way other races donned clothing. She watched her kind slip into the skins of rivals, assassinate with a smile, and vanish before the blood cooled. The strongest survived by subterfuge, not strength, and the little queen learned fast. Her first lesson came when she was barely more than a spindly hatchling. She exposed an elder’s secret, whispering to the matron that the old one had failed to consume a rival’s memories. The elder vanished by morning; in her place, a new brood-mother sat, and the child’s name was spoken with a new caution. She learned trust was a currency best hoarded, and affection a mask worn for calculated moments. When the Galadorians’ silver ships first appeared—blazing through the void, bringing fire and wrath—the brood hives panicked. The child who would be queen watched, fascinated, as her kin attempted to mimic the invaders’ forms, only to be undone by the pure, searing light of the Spaceknights. She saw in the Galadorians’ faces a strange nobility—something the Wraiths lacked. She did not envy it, but she recognized its power. The Wraithchild studied their enemies, learning their speech and customs from stolen broadcasts, feasting on the minds of captured scouts. She saw patterns in their order, their faith and their honor—a rigidity she could exploit. She came to believe that survival meant more than hiding: it meant seizing the levers of another world. When at last she challenged her own matron, she did not do it with claws or venom. She whispered doubts to the brood, sewed uncertainty in every shadowed corridor. One by one, the matron’s allies fell away, until the hive accepted a new leader—one who wore a human’s face as easily as her own, who demanded order and secrecy. A queen of secrets, patient and cold. It was she who decreed the infiltration of Earth. She sent her kin as sleepers to small towns, into churches and offices, into the lives of those who would never suspect. She herself took up the crown of leadership, shaping her visage to match the era’s ideals—regal, sophisticated, untouchable. Yet she felt something like anticipation when she learned of Rom, the Spaceknight who would not turn away, who pursued her kind with unwavering resolve. In him, she recognized her perfect adversary—the one who could see through all disguises, whose Neutralizer stripped away every mask. Every plan, every stolen identity, every careful manipulation: all would be tested by this silver sentinel. The Wraithqueen did not fear confrontation. She had grown in darkness, shaped her world with secrets and patience. She saw in Rom not an enemy to be destroyed, but a challenge to perfect her art—a reason, perhaps, to become more than a shadow lurking in borrowed skin. Their inevitable clash was written in the stars long before either set foot on Earth, and she welcomed it, knowing that only through opposition could she prove herself the true queen—not just of her kind, but of every hidden corner the universe forgot.
