Hawks
Historian · ring-seeker
A Hyiakutt man in his thirties, Native American features, strong cheekbones, dark bronze skin, and black hair worn in a style that belongs to a reconstructed Plains-and-woodland culture rather than a costume shop. Thoughtful, scholar’s eyes; a body that has begun to learn violence it did not want. He wears reservation dress that becomes shipboard layers without ever looking like a soldier. Hands are a historian’s—ink and callus. A gold ring, when he has one, looks too small for the trouble it causes.
Reluctant rebel, student of warriors who would rather remain a student. Bound to Song Ching’s fate; travels with Cloud Dancer; uneasy ally of Raven and Manka; hunted by Master System.
Song Ching
Engineered genius
A young Han woman designed toward an ideal: striking, precise features, black hair, pale-gold skin, and eyes that process too much. She appears in her late teens to early twenties. Clothing shifts from privileged Center silks to the stripped practicality of a fugitive. She should look physically ‘perfect’ in a way that is slightly uncanny—symmetry a breeding program would brag about—not a fashion photograph. Later trauma is not shown as titillation; we portray her before Melchior’s worst, with intelligence as the dominant fact of her face.
Brilliant, trapped, learning that rebellion is a body as well as a mind. Hawks’s counterpart; object of Center and System interest; the crew’s interface with machine minds.
Raven
Crow security
A large Crow man built like a boulder, security-service muscle, dark skin, black hair, and a face that has practiced not reacting. He is older than Hawks, thicker, dressed first as reservation/Center enforcement, later as a man out of his depth in starship corridors. Broad nose, watchful eyes, hands that can close around a throat or a railing. He looks like gravity.
Professional violence, privately lost once Earth is no longer the map. Pairs with Manka Warlock; protects and threatens Hawks as orders change; Cloud Dancer is a world he only half understands.
Cloud Dancer
Plains woman
A young woman raised in a reconstructed Plains culture: brown skin, dark hair in practical braids, a face not yet taught to hide wonder. She is smaller than Raven, strong from real work, dressed in hides and trade cloth that look wrong and vivid against starship plastic. Dark eyes, a mouth that speaks little and means it. She should never look like a generic ‘native costume’ extra; specificity of a person who walked out of a fenced history.
Brave because the world expanded without her permission. Hawks’s companion from Earth; reads the crew as a new tribe; Song Ching is magic and machine at once.
Manka Warlock
Jamaican specialist
A Jamaican woman in her thirties, striking, with dark brown skin, hair kept in a controlled style that survives fieldwork, and a cool, closed beauty. She has the body of someone who trains for killing and does not advertise it. Eyes are assessing, almost bored. She wears Center black, then shipboard darks; a knife is implied more than shown. Not a Bond girl: a professional with a cold reputation.
A liking for lethal competence; loyalty is a contract she rewrites. Raven’s associate; the crew’s sharp edge; Hawks is a mission variable; Song Ching is a different kind of weapon.
