Chapter prose
Gloria Baker stood alone atop the pit wall at Boulder Bay, the sea-wind tangling her hair as dusk burned the horizon in violet and orange. Below, MASK’s vehicles gleamed—chrome and muscle, the world’s protection—but up here she felt only exposed. The ache that had grown inside her for years was sharp tonight: her devotion to Matt Trakker, the only leader she’d ever trusted, and the wall that always kept her at a careful distance. She had matched his reserve with bravado, hidden longing behind a daredevil’s grin, but the ache had never faded. Tonight, it pressed in like a storm cloud she couldn’t outrun. She pressed her arms tight around herself, the chill biting through her teal racing suit as she watched the bay. The wind carried a new sound—twin turbines, unfamiliar, and laughter that was low and cruel. VENOM. Heart leaping, she spotted the angular silhouette of an insectile car idling under the sodium lights. Miles Mayhem emerged, armor catching the last light, every movement predatory and sure. Gloria’s pulse hammered. She should have reported—should have called Matt—but she couldn’t look away. Mayhem’s reputation was carved in sabotage and venom, but lately, Gloria had found herself fixated for reasons she dared not name. His words lingered with her, not just as threats, but as puzzles. He saw things; he saw her. The realization left her breathless, ashamed, and—against her every instinct—thrilled. Even now, helmet in hand, she felt the pull to step closer to the darkness he brought. A voice behind her, familiar and gentle, snapped the spell. “Gloria?” Matt Trakker’s silhouette was tall and careful, his blue-gray eyes narrowed in worry. “VENOM’s here. I want you in Shark.” She nodded, careful to keep her voice steady. “Copy that.” Did he see how her hands trembled? Did he care? The ache twisted again, sharper for the way he seemed to look right through her. The mission exploded into action. MASK’s convoy tore into the bay, engines howling in neon-lit spray. Gloria’s hands steadied on Shark’s wheel, every sense tuned to Mayhem’s movements. He was reckless, brilliant—a threat, yes, but something more. Somehow, in the chaos, their eyes met through mirrored visors. The world narrowed to that single electric jolt. “Baker, break left!” Matt’s voice snapped across her comm. She obeyed, barely dodging a barrage. His orders were crisp, protective—but for the first time, she resented being shielded. The fight ended in a deadlock. VENOM retreated, engines vanishing into the shadows, and Gloria found herself alone by Shark, helmet cradled in her lap as surf hissed against stone. She hadn’t won; she hadn’t lost. She was simply adrift, caught between two impossible pulls. Matt approached, tension in every line of his posture. “You risked too much,” he said quietly. “I can’t lose you, Gloria.” The words should have warmed her. Instead, she met his gaze, the confession trembling on her tongue. “Matt, what am I to you?” He hesitated, and in that pause, the ache turned to certainty. She forced a smile. “Just making sure.” Later, in the shadows beyond the sodium lights, Mayhem watched her go, amusement flickering beneath his severe features. The game had changed. He’d seen the longing in her—both the strength and the wound. VENOM would use any advantage. And Gloria, for reasons he couldn’t yet name, was suddenly central to the war. Alone, Gloria let the engine’s hum fill her chest. She stared out at the dark water, heart warring between loyalty and the dangerous thrill of finally being noticed. The next mission would be different. And so, she knew now, would she.
