If the future is only a glimpse away, what will we become?

A misty Cretaceous jungle clearing with the gleaming, plastic-armored Amphibian crashed amid ferns. Questar, a handsome, upright man in blue-and-white ceremonial armor with medium-brown hair, stands beside Serena, a gentle-faced blonde woman in paler healer's gear. Early morning sunlight slants through the mist, dinosaurs graze nearby in glossy armor, and the ship pulses with blue light, contrasting with the ochre jungle. Faces are earnest and worried.
The ship is acting strange, Questar.Serena
Maybe it's a sign, Serena—time is restless here.Questar

Inside the Amphibian's glowing control room, Questar, Serena, and Mind-Zei (elderly bald man with white beard and light armor robes) cluster around a console casting blue light. The viewport shows a flash of a futuristic city—glass towers, no dinosaurs.
That city—it's nothing like our world!Serena
No dinosaurs. No Valorians. Is this our fate?Mind-Zei
Questar, in profile, fingers the console nervously. Mind-Zei stands calm but sad. Serena watches the city fade.

Chapter prose
Morning broke over the Cretaceous jungle in a haze of ochre and blue, slanting sunlight across armored backs of grazing hadrosaurs. Questar stood on a rise beside Serena, the Amphibian gleaming awkwardly between tangled ferns. Its hull—meant for stars, not ancient forests—looked more lost than any Valorian. Mind-Zei’s voice hummed in Questar’s thoughts, soft as river water: "Time is a river with many branches, Questar. Sometimes, we see what lies downstream." Questar steeled himself. “If only the Rulons were so patient.” Inside the Amphibian, the scouting party was small: Questar, Serena, and Mind-Zei. The ship’s pulse had grown erratic, its chronal drive stuttering. Questar powered up the observation terminal—one last attempt to scan for a path home. Sudden blue light flooded the cabin, and then the viewport filled with impossible color. Instead of jungle, there sprawled a city—gleaming glass towers, steel bridges, no dinosaurs in sight. Serena’s breath caught. “Is this... Earth’s future?” “Where are the dinosaurs?” Mind-Zei asked softly. “Where are we?” Questar felt the question roil inside him. The answer was written in the silence. They had glimpsed a world with no place for their great allies. No way home, perhaps, and no Valorian future here. A warning klaxon howled. Rasp slithered on the external viewer, his snake-armor slicing through ferns. Rulon scouts flanked him, searching. Questar’s hands danced over controls. “They can’t see this. If Krulos learns what the Amphibian can do—” Serena grasped his arm. “True, but what if we can’t escape? We can’t let the Rulons shape this time—our future.” Mind-Zei’s gaze never wavered. “The truth is a burden, but a shield as well. Hiding it from Krulos may save more than us.” The ship’s drive flickered. Rasp’s shadow played across the hull. Questar faced a choice: reroute power to cloak the vision, risking the ship’s function, or gamble and try to fix the chronal drive, maybe even return home—if it meant the Rulons might seize the technology. The city in the viewport glimmered, promise and warning all at once. He pressed the panel. "We hide it. For now, we stay and fight for what matters." Serena nodded, relief and sorrow in her eyes. “For the dinosaurs. For our people.” Outside, Rasp hissed orders, unaware. The future flickered out, replaced by jungle green. The Valorians had chosen. The war—here and now—would remain. But Questar could not forget the city, or the cost of never seeing it again. Somewhere in the ferns, the dinosaurs bellowed. Time marched on, indifferent. And behind the armored bulk of the Amphibian, hope and danger both waited for another dawn.
