Chapter prose
Clouds gathered in gentle tufts over Daikoku Bay, softening the sun’s glare and lending the shoreline a nostalgic haze. Yasako felt the familiar press of sand between her toes as she tightened the straps of her modest blue bikini. Fumie, in a coral two-piece with a retro zip-up rashguard, bounced beside her, twisting her AR glasses in the light. The beach was dotted with umbrellas and distant laughter, but here by the gentle surf it felt like the two of them had slipped into a pocket of simpler time. “Ready?” Fumie grinned, spinning the volleyball in her hands. Yasako nodded, smiling despite herself. She stretched, feeling the comfort of Fumie’s easy energy. The city—its labyrinthine codes and lingering digital ghosts—felt a world away. Today, they had promised themselves, was for play. The first serve sailed over the net. Yasako darted sideways, sand flying, barely making the return. Fumie lunged, saving the ball with a sharp laugh. They volleyed back and forth, laughter bubbling up, the rhythm of their friendship as familiar as the tide. But as Yasako reset for her serve, she caught a flicker in the periphery: a shimmer on the edge of her AR overlay. She hesitated, then shook it off—probably a trick of the light. Still, the feeling of being watched crept in. Fumie, noticing the pause, nudged her. “Don’t let me win that easy, Yasako!” On the promenade above the beach, Isako watched from behind polarized AR lenses, her dark jacket zipped up despite the humidity. She leaned on the railing, an unreadable look in her eyes. The silver interface on her wrist pulsed with silent code. Here in the open, Yasako and Fumie seemed so exposed—so blissfully unaware of what lurked beneath the city’s digital currents. Isako’s lips curled, half in amusement, half in longing. She hadn’t meant to follow them, but something about their laughter tugged at old, unresolved threads. Her plan—well, she hadn’t quite decided if it was sabotage or a test. Down below, Fumie spiked the ball, sand spraying. Yasako dived, missing it by a hair. The world narrowed to sun, sea, and the pounding of their hearts. But then, Fumie’s AR specs chirped—a faint digital ping that shouldn’t be here, far from Daikoku’s tangled networks. “Did you hear that?” Fumie asked, straightening. Yasako nodded, worry pinching her brow. The ping repeated, a digital echo threading through the ambient overlays. Their glasses flickered, distorting the beach—just for a breath, Yasako saw the sand ripple as if something moved beneath. On the promenade, Isako tapped her wrist interface. Invisible lines of code spiraled out, weaving subtle disturbances in the AR around her friends. She watched their confusion, waiting to see if they’d notice the trap she’d set—an unauthorized patch, a shadow in the overlay, nothing overtly malicious. Not yet. Yasako stepped closer to Fumie, her tone quietly serious. “Someone’s here.” “Isako?” Fumie guessed, ever the quick study. She scanned the upper walk, finally spotting the dark silhouette framed against the cloudy sky. Isako met their gaze, her mask slipping just enough to show a ghost of a smile. She raised a hand in a mock salute. Sand and digital air tingled with uneasy anticipation. “Should we call her down?” Fumie whispered. Yasako shook her head. “Let’s see what she wants first.” The beach was no longer a haven. But Yasako felt a surge of resolve—here, in the open, was a chance to confront old shadows, to draw the boundaries between memory and now, friend and rival. The game wasn’t over; it had just changed its rules.
