Chapter prose
The city of Tokyo pulsed with unfamiliar energy as Misaki Suzuhara stepped from the train station, her white-and-blue school jacket pressed crisp against the cool morning air. She clutched her duffel in one hand, the other smoothing the pleats of her skirt—a nervous habit. Her heart fluttered with hope and something close to fear. This was the city where her mother lived. This was where dreams, and maybe answers, waited. She didn't get lost, not really. The signs were clear, and a kind old man pointed her to the arcade when she asked about Angelic Layer. The building's glass facade shimmered, reflecting a swirl of neon, vendors, and the endless flow of players. Inside, the hum of the Layer resonated through the air, punctuated by the cheers of spectators and the sharp, digital melodies of battle. Misaki felt her nerves fade as she moved through the crowd. She thought of her mother, Shuko, and the promise of something new. She found the workshop tucked behind the main floor, its door painted with bold, cheerful letters. Inside, children crowded around workbenches, their hands busy with tiny wings and smooth plastic limbs. An older boy with spiked hair—Koutarou, she learned—guided her gently to a case near the wall. There she saw Hikaru for the first time: delicate, fierce, with a shock of red hair and a pose that radiated determination. "You built her?" the boy asked, eyes wide. Misaki nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "She's... kind of my partner." With Hikaru in hand, Misaki watched a match on a nearby Layer. Icchan—white lab coat, round glasses, a mischievous grin—caught her gaze. "First time, Suzuhara-san?" She nodded, cheeks pink. "Yes. Can I try?" "Of course!" His voice was gentle. "You and Hikaru, right?" They set up the Layer. Across from her, a smiling woman in a yellow sweater—a regular, someone the kids called Sumi—waved. "Don't be nervous. I won't go easy just because it's your first match." The world narrowed to the Layer, the shining surface like water. Misaki's hands trembled as she placed Hikaru at the edge. The crowd hushed. Sumi's Angel, a sturdy blue-armor type, towered over Hikaru. Misaki swallowed, focusing. She could feel her heart in her fingertips. "Begin!" the referee called. At first, Hikaru stumbled. Sumi's Angel was quick—too quick. But then, something clicked. Misaki remembered her mother’s gentle encouragement, the way she'd once fixed a broken doll with hands softer than memory. Misaki leaned into the Layer, her hope pouring into every command. Hikaru dodged a sweeping kick, then leaped—in the air, her Angel gleamed. The workshop kids cheered. Even Icchan leaned forward, eyes bright. Sumi smiled, surprised now, as Hikaru danced past her Angel's guard and landed the first point. The match wasn't easy. Every blow Misaki landed felt earned, every narrow escape a miracle. When the final bell rang, a hush fell. The scoreboard flashed. Hikaru had won by a single point. Misaki gasped, unable to believe it. Sumi chuckled, clapping her hands. "Well done, newbie!" Icchan appeared at her side, pushing his glasses up with a proud smile. "You have talent, Misaki. Welcome to Angelic Layer." In the stands, the workshop kids and a tall woman with steely hair—someone Misaki didn't recognize—smiled, as if they knew something she didn't. But for now, Misaki held Hikaru close, her heart light. For the first time, Tokyo felt like home.
