Chapter prose
Wind swept across the Tokyo skyline, tugging at Misaki Suzuhara’s jacket as she stepped onto the rooftop. The city glimmered below, neon signs flickering in the late afternoon light. A gentle hum of excitement buzzed in her chest—this was new. The tournament’s main arena had glitched spectacularly after lunch, and, in a burst of improvisation, the organizers had moved the final preliminary match outdoors, high above the city on a gleaming, white-tiled roof. Her friends clustered by the stairwell—Tamayo, vibrant as ever, flashed her a thumbs-up, while Hatoko, now a young adult herself, gave a quiet nod. Icchan lurked near the judge’s table, adjusting his round glasses and grinning like a mischievous cat. The crowd had been pared down to a handful of VIPs and the match’s two Deus, but the tension was electric. Misaki flexed her hands, feeling the cool, unfamiliar weight of the portable Layer controller. Across the roof, Sai Jounouchi stood calm and statuesque, her own Angel case at her feet, dark hair rippling in the wind. Sai’s gaze was flinty, but not unkind. “Ready?” she called, her voice carrying easily through the gusts. Misaki grinned, heart thumping. “Always.” The judge gave the signal. Both placed their Angels—Misaki’s Hikaru, bright-eyed and nimble in her blue and white battle dress; Sai’s Helene, tall, swift, and menacing in angular armor of dark green. The plastic Layer field shimmered to life, projected in wavering blue beneath their feet. But the wind was real and unpredictable, not like the climate-controlled stadium below. Misaki felt it tug at her own hair—and at Hikaru’s tiny frame, barely two hands tall. “Begin!” Helene spiraled into motion, scything forward with supernatural speed, almost a blur. Misaki’s fingers danced on the controls, Hikaru springing back, her brown hair flickering in the wind. But an updraft almost tipped her Angel off balance. Misaki bit her lip—Hikaru’s perfect stats meant nothing if she couldn’t account for the weather. A gust might send her tumbling. She watched Sai carefully. Her rival was cool, focused, using the wind’s push to boost Helene’s already dizzying speed. The crowd gasped as Helene feinted, then darted in from the side. Hikaru barely dodged, her skirt whipping. “Don’t just react. Think, feel!” Icchan’s voice, soft but insistent, reached Misaki even through the wind. Misaki recalled the countless times she’d imagined talking to Hikaru. Her Angel wasn’t just a bundle of data—she was quick-witted, playful, spirited. That was what made her unique. She took a breath, slowing her hands, picturing what Hikaru would do—lean into the wind, use its energy, not fight it. “Let’s fly, Hikaru,” she whispered. As Helene charged again, Misaki swept her hand. Hikaru spun, leaping into the wind’s current, turning what should have been a stumble into a dazzling aerial roll. The crowd cheered as she landed, balanced perfectly on the edge of the Layer, facing Helene with a fearless smile. Sai’s eyes widened. She redoubled her attack, Helene slashing in a flurry. But now, Misaki was ahead of the motion, moving not by numbers but by heart. Each time, Hikaru seemed to anticipate, letting the wind lift her just enough to evade or redirect—graceful, alive. At last, Helene overextended, a sudden gust catching her off-balance. Hikaru moved—swift, sure—a single, gentle tap. Helene toppled, landing with a thud outside the Layer’s shimmering boundary. “Winner: Hikaru!” The crowd erupted. Misaki let out a joyful breath, heart soaring. She glanced at Sai, who offered a rare, rueful smile—acknowledgment between rivals. Tamayo and Hatoko rushed to the Layer’s edge, cheering. Icchan looked on, his eyes shining with pride—and something deeper, as if he’d seen a mystery begin to unfold. Above them, wind played through the city. Misaki held Hikaru close, feeling the connection between player and Angel, stronger than ever. This was only the beginning.
